Mullion
The mullion is a division that marks the dividing area between multiple units of a window. Mullions are vertical dividers and can also be found between double doors. Although mostly decorative by nature, it serves an important role when used in windows. This is because it offers a rigid framework that helps to support the glazing on the window.
Mullions can be made from a variety of materials including metal, stone fiberglass, and even wood. Your professional window installation contractor might recommend them if you are opting for classic window styles such as Renaissance or Gothic styles.
Insulated Glass Units
Insulated glass units are designed to minimize condensation on the surface of your window. This in turn reduces the risk of mildew or mold growth on the window surface.
Insulated glass units come in a variety of types including standard IGUs which are simply two glass panes with space between them. Triple-pane IGUs feature three glass panes as the name suggests. However, the space between the panes is filled with an inert gas that offers enhanced insulation.
Bay Windows
These are a type of window style that consists of three window panels that protrude outwards from the wall of the house. They may consist of a fixed panel at the center with two operable window panels on each side.
Bay windows are popular with homeowners as they allow more light to enter the room. This creates a brighter ambiance. The fact that the window design protrudes from the building means that there is additional space created that can be used for a variety of functions such as seating or storage.
Tempered Glass
Tempered glass is a type of glass that is treated to increase its toughness and durability. The process of tempering this glass is known as thermal tempering. During this process, glass is heated to a very high temperature and then rapidly cooled. This cooling process causes the outer layer of the glass to solidify and contract. It increases the outer layer’s strength and durability.
Tempered glass is used for its safety features, when broken, it shatters into tiny pieces which are less likely to cause harm than large shards of glass. Tempered glass is also tougher and less likely to break. This is useful in a state like Arizona where dust storms are likely to whip up debris against your windows.
Energy Efficient Windows
They are designed to reduce heat transfer. These windows bring improved insulation to your house and help reduce energy consumption. Energy-efficient windows have a variety of features that make them energy efficient.
They may feature low emissivity coatings which are applied to the window and reflect heat out during summer or back in during winter. Energy-efficient windows may also have gas-filled spaces between multiple panes which serves to reduce heat transfer. Apart from reducing your energy bills, energy-efficient windows can make your home more comfortable as well as increase sound insulation.
